One of the most popular fad diets around, the grapefruit diet has graced the covers of countless women's magazines for decades. While the quick weight-loss plan may have a long shelf-life, it's hard to say how long somebody could actually stick to this way of eating. Most nutritionists recommend a diet that's at least 1,200 calories -- this is less that 800.
Legend has it that grapefruit speeds up the fat-burning process. The beta-carotene found in pink grapefruit lowers cholesterol and improves heart health. Most people grapple with the grapefruit diet to lose their extra pounds fast. However, common sense says it's more a by-product of drastic calorie reduction that's attributed to the 10 to 20-pound loss over a two-week period.
Breakfast is comprised of ˝ a grapefruit, 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon. Lunch is ˝ grapefruit, a salad with dressing of choice and all the meat you can eat. For dinner, enjoy meat or fish, salad with dressing or a red or green veggie with butter, ˝ a grapefruit and a cup of coffee or tea. Your bedtime snack is 8 ounces of skim milk.
Keep in mind that it's highly unlikely you'll be able to stay on this diet for an extended period of time. The calorie level is not healthy and although the weight may come off quickly, it will return just as fast… and then some.

Have personally tried this diet. Diet is ok for about a week but for me the urge for potatoes or candy takes over "big time".

This is a fad diet, and a person could not stay on it indefinitely. It is unhealthy because the calories are too few to meet all of your daily nutritional needs. I would not be interested in this type of diet.

This diet is great if you want to lose weight for a special occasion, like a wedding or something. You lose weight pretty quickly, but unfortunately you will gain some back as soon as you go off the diet!!

1. Bacon is very high fat, high sodium, and even causes migraines; why are you recommending it?!!!
2. You say 1,200 calories instead; what would that consist of? 1 egg 1 slice of toast; a piece of fruit; a TV dinner of 400 calories for lunch with a piece of fruit; and a salad with 4 ozs of meat and V8 for dinner?

I tried this diet. It is hard to stay on it. Two eggs and two slices of bacon everyday was too much for me. All I kept thinking was about how high was cholesterol was going to be. I swithed to a low carb. style of eating and lost 12 lbs. in one month.

Information on the low fat ranch dressing is apparently wrong---IF it has ONLY 30 calories for two tablespoons, AND 6 grams of fat. 6 grams of fat @ 9 calories per gram equals at least 54 calories. Perhaps it was supposed to say 3 grams per tablespoon.
