The Rice Diet
Published 03/2/2006 | Low Calorie , High Fiber | Rating:

Wok away the pounds with The Rice Diet. As hokey as it sounds, the Rice Diet Program is actually far from a sham. The program dates back to 1939 and is affiliated with Duke University.

According to their website, the diet prevents diabetes, obesity, heart disease, hypertension, renal illness and other ailments. There is actually a Rice Diet Clinic in Durham, North Carolina that's supervised by a staff or doctors, dietitians and nurses.

Anybody interested in following the program without checking into the residential program can invest in a copy of The Rice Diet Solution.

Through the book, readers learn how to rely on nutrition, exercise, meditation, yoga and journaling to lose those extra pounds. There are also plenty of resources to improve physical and emotional health. In addition, the book is chock full of resources to improve physical and emotional health. In addition, there is an online forum where followers of The Rice Diet can receive additional support.

Ironically, the diet doesn't have much to do with rice at all. During Phase I of the 12-week program, participants dine on grains and fruits. They recommend you do not try this at home. In Phase 2, you're allowed to consume vegetables, beans and other carbohydrates, in addition to the grains and fruits.

INTERESTING ARTICLE...IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE IT'S FOR ME, BUT THIS IS REALLY MY FIRST TIME TO REVIEW YOUR WEBSITE. IMPRESSIVE!! I DO NEED TO LOSE APPROX. 40 LBS., BUT I'M UNABLE TO EXCERCISE RIGHT NOW (I HAVE PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY...UNKNOWN CAUSE)...I'M DOING A PARATHYROID SURGERY SOON AND I'VE BEEN TOLD IT CAN IMPROVE MY NEUROPATHY...I HAVE TO DO THE SURGERY ANYWAY...3 OF THE 4 PARATHYROIDS HAVE MASSES ON THEM (BELIEVED TO BE NON-CANCEROUS)...SO...MY POINT BEING, I PLAN ON REFERENCING YOUR WEBSITE ONCE I'M READY TO LOSE MY WEIGHT.

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS!!

I think the rice is an excellent diet if administered correctly.I am a 62 y.o male in excellent health.Have taken excellent care of myself all my life starting when I was 20 y.o.Never over weight, but tried many diets being that I always was into health and body building. As far as rice goes I have always and only eat brown rice, being that the husk of the rice is the best part of it.Brown rice also does not raise your insulin level whereas white rice does and you crave for more. The same goes for refined sugar, you need to stay away from that and turn to either pure cane sugar or succanate. They digest slower in your system which gives the individual body time to burn it off and not turn into glcogen.

This diet is sound, but unrealistic for people more than 15 lbs. overweight to stick with in the longer term. Reminds me of the Jimi Hendrix diet -- don't ask!

TO ME THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN INTERESTING WAY TO LOOSE WEIGHT AS LONG AS YOU ARE UNDER THE CLOSE SUPERVISION OF YOUR PRIMARY DOCTOR. BEING A DIABETIC, THIS DIET IS NOT FOR ME. I THINK IT IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS YOUNG AND HEALTHY.

Not alot of info here, but when you look at china and japan they seam to live on rice and I don't believe their countries have the weight problems that us americans do. I myself have lost 130lbs in the past year and a half , then put on 30 because of a health issue and having surgery. Now for the past month I have struggled, All the things I did before aren't workimg. I visit this website daily for any tips to help me get back on track for the 70lbs i have to go. Just want to thank you for the info you provide on your site.

If it is recommended that you do not do Phase I at home, why would you even recommend it to us. Some of us do not live even remotely close to Durham, NC.

What is the point? Why not disclose the types of unprocessed rice to the readers? If there was nothing to 'gain' from this site, the "plan" would be included. Hello everyone...eat fruits, veggies and once in a while a sardine while be monitored by a medical team...magic...DUHHH! Give me a break!

I have been on this rice diet since April of 2006 and IT DOES WORK!!! This article did not give nearly enough info. There is a home version of the diet and can be found in the book: The Rice Diet Solution by Kitty Rosati. You can also find more info on their website: www.ricedietprogram.com There is also a forum for this site that you can read/participate in and talk to LOTS of people (ricers as we call ourselves) who are doing this very healthy, wholesome diet. BTW On the home version Phase 1 of the rice diet, you can eat ANY starch, ANY fruit, ANY veggie that you want and still lose weight. I have lost 72 pounds myself and there are others who have lost over 100 pounds. My advice would be to check out the website and/or get the book and read it for yourself. Also, for you diabetics, there are many ricers who have (with doctor's approval)been able to stop taking insulin.......this diet is THAT healthy.
Hope this explains a little more about this weight loss program and makes you want to check it out!

I'm with donna (Cmt 8) on this one. Would like to get a cheap copy so I can forgo the rigors of buying a book. That ain't fun, especially when you decide the book is not what you thought it was going to be. Any good sammaritan would be appreciated. Regardless, I appreciate the info.

The Rice Diet caught my attention, because I live on a Wheat-Free Diet. But not nearly enough information given with the article. Supply me with recipes.

I reciently found out I might be alergic to gluten. When I lived in Korea for a year and lost 60 lbs, I did have some bread and a few potatoes but most the time ate rice , rice noodles and other forms of rice with a varity of vegtables and meats mostly chicken , pork and seafood, as beef is very expensive. The only exercise I got was walking 2.5 miles to and from school 5 days a week. I have been back a year and have gained most of the weight back. I have just started to eat more rice and rice product so I will see how it goes .
Being in Korea has taught me there are more ways to prepare rice than boiling it. and more types of rice than the long grain most of us are used to. "Poccum Bap" (fried rice patty" and "Kim Bap" (julianne veggies and meat rolled in rice and then wraped in seaweed, something like sushi) are great. It's just a different way of eating.

This diet sounds very much like the "Daniel fast" from the Bible. Read Daniel Ch. 1 Vs. 8 thru 17. Since this is the year for "repair, restoration and reward" why not prepare ourselves physically thru prayer and healthy eating. Daniel asked for only water, fresh fruits and vegetables for he and his three Isralite friends in the King's care.
