The Cabbage Soup Diet
Published 03/2/2006 | Low Calorie | Rating:

Lose 10 pounds in just 7 days.

That's the promise of the Cabbage Soup Diet, which has become notorious for being the ultimate fad diet.  If you're looking for a quick fix, this might be just the thing for you - if you can stomach an ultra-low calorie diet based largely on a "soup" consisting of cabbage, tomatoes, onion, celery, carrots, mushrooms and onion soup mix.

The Cabbage Soup Recipe can be prepared like this.

6 large green onion
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 carrots
1 10 oz. container of mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
half a head of cabbage
1 package Lipton soup mix
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48 ounces can V8 juice (optional)
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder

Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to sauté with cooking spray. Cut pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot. Take the outer leaves layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot. Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot. Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot. If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put head on low. Let soup cook for a long time -- two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Supposedly, the cabbage soup has fat-burning properties that boost weight loss. It doesn't hurt that you're also lowering your calorie intake to a dangerous level. Among the reported side effects of following this diet are light-headedness, weakness and decreased concentration. These feelings can be attributed to the fact that you're virtually starving your body.

I went on this diet a number of years ago. I stayed on it for two weeks and lost 14 lbs. However, I did experience a light-headedness and weakness. Additionally, once you go off of this diet, you promptly gain the weight back. I'm not sure that I would recommend this diet as it was my experience on the fifth day into the diet, I started to feel very weak. The cabbage is a diuretic and you loose a great deal of fluid.

Having tried this diet, I can honestly say that IF someone is very comfortable with consuming primarily veggie based soup for most of their days meal consumption. Along with fruits & veggies in between, this diet can be very accomodating indeed! I have usually adhered to this diet when my hubby would travel for work. This way was very comfortable for me & the fact that I had no_one else to plan meals for at home! This diet does help with maintainence & is quite versatile because of it's primary basis. This diet allows individuals to 'control' weight gain as well as 'maintain' weight gain/loss. Any dedicated individual can do this diet with little to no effort. Those that say the weight comes back, are correct, BUT they are the ones who fail to realize their weight management is based on one's eating habits! Duh! Yes, you will regain pounds from ANY diet if you go off a health diet regime...this diet is one which gets you primarily on the right track to weight loss & control. YOU, the individual are always the primary deciding factor when it comes to what YOU choose to consume or choose to be concientious about eating! This diet can be beneficial IF one makes a concientious choice, THEN once achieving one's goal, this diet permits you to go to eating regular meals yet interjecting the Cabbage Soup as an alternative choice in between! Your body usually reflects what you eat & how you care for yourself...the Cabbage Diet merely reflects the results of an individuals choice & commitment. The rest is ultimately up to YOU By the way, I personally love the taste/combo of this diet AND I have served this soup to many people unknowingly simply because it was availble(already made) & someone agreed to wanting to share soup & their sandwich for lunch while a guest in our home! My daughters guy friends who ALWAYS yearn for the good ol home_cooked meal flavor...LOVED eating this soup! They never once knew nor cared what it was called, they just KNEW it tasted good! And by golly gee, I do AGREE! It is yummy!

This diet worked for me before! I have been looking for it!!! Thank you so much. Although this is a low-calorie diet, with unlimited amounts of very tasty soup, I never felt like I was starving!!! It takes more calories to burn cabbage after ingestion than other foods, and you do not have to stay on this diet 7 days per week for it to work. I kept a cheat day (Saturday or Sunday) to have anything I desired (usually a good plate of "normal" food and desert) and the diet still worked for me. Thank You. Sincerely, Kathleen Morris

I used this diet a few years ago, only I left the mushrooms out. It works but the weight comes back. I had no side effects and lost between 15 & 20 pounds, then it started creeping back on when I quit the diet.

The cabbage soup diet is the bomb.Especially if you want quit weight loss results. I am on it now for the 3 time and I am very pleased. The soup is good, there is a variety of foods to eat if you just sit and plan your meal and not try to comsume all the veggie and fruits in one meal. Plan which fruit and veggie you will eat for breakfast, then lunch and then dinner and you will not go tired of the eating the same thing over and over each meal. As with any diet if you do not have a maintenance plan or a mind to change your life style eating habits you will quickly put back the weight. Each time I've used it I came off of it with a maintenance plan and it is now about 4 years and I've only gained back about 7 of the 36 pounds I've lost. I'm on it now because there is this must have dress I need to get into(he he). I suggest if you are like me and need to see quick results in order to stay on a diet this is the one. Condition your mind that you will start eating healthy for the rest of your life and you won't have to worry about putting all your hard work back on too quickly. Go for people Go for it.

This diet is the real thing for those who at times are lazy about fixing the main course of your dinner.i made a huge pot of it at one time per week ,had my grocery list made out,so that all i bought at the grocery store was just what was on the plan.my husband and and i added a few extras like zucchini and beef low sodium boullion to the soup,on banana day we would do 1 only frozen sugar free and fat free frozen ommrecommend it.treat, and in two weeks i lost 25 lbs. and he lost 27 lbs. i think because of his line of work brick mason, also we added herbs to our diet so that we would get the nutrition our bodies needed.we highly

I have used this diet before with no side effects. I don't believe it was created as a normal everyday diet, for more as a kickstart to lose the weight. As has been mentioned in other reviews it really is a matter of how much you want to lose weight and change your eating habits, which is the real key to permanent weight loss. I was over 100lbs over my ideal weight and have dropped over 50lbs from changing my eating habits. I used the soup to start me off and I still eat it on occasion. I just make a smaller batch. Good luck to all of us on our quest to take off weight.

This diet may not be what people call the best but it helped me lose 160 pounds. I am going o go back on it as soon as I can financially. I need to loose about 160 more. I have kept it of even though I haven't been on the diet since December and have even still lost a little.

I use this diet all the time, probably 3-4 times a year. Like most people, I am guilty of gaining 10-15 pounds when I can't exercise because I'm on vacation or just not watching my food choices the way I should. I do light workouts (stretches and waist exercises) and never have a problem wiht the diet. I generally lose about 6 pounds a week of fat and stay on the diet for one to two weeks. It has become my standard for diets because you are not limited to the amount you can eat. I have recommended this diet to a lot of people who have used it successfully. I jazz the soup up with a can of kidney beans and chili powder. It has always worked well for me. I believe you erred on day 5 and 6. Day 5 is up to 6 tomatoes and water and soup. Day 6 is up to three steaks and a leafy green vegetable.

I apprecieated the advice. However, I wish it were more indepth. Perhaps, I am not understanding something. Sorry about that. But I am anxious to try this "diet". I dearly love cabbage soup. You did say there a many variations of this soup. What are they or have extra calories been added to increase the flavor? i.e. chicken, beef, pork, Lamb?????

A few of you asked for info on effects and medical conditions.Well,
those with high BP would risk sudden/& sharp drops in BP, falls & injury because the Celery will bring down BP Quickly. A doctor on from Mayo clinic, I think, prescribes celery for his patients, but cautions that it often causes him to have to adjust down their BP medicines. I thought you might want to check with your Dr and also check out the celery thing on WebMD. Also, watch about eating large numbers of Bananas which are high in potassium which can alter your heart rhythm
    You might consider taking a good multi/vit with Iron;

I tried this diet before my wedding. I wanted to lose 50 lbs but I only lost 35 lbs in 4 months. But I still look very good @ 5'5 & 150 lbs I was very happy. But I did not do the 7 day diet plan with it. I only eat one meal @ (2:00p.m)a day. I would get dizzy but i did'nt care. I said to my self, while everytime I look @ food was I'm going to maui for our honeymoon for two weeks for the first time or the last time in my life lets make the best of it and look good in my 2 piece and that is what I did. But it slowly came back and more after 6 mon to a year. Now that just had my baby 7 months ago, I gained 50 lbs with her. I would like to lose 70 lbs to get to where I was before. So, going to do it again. Wish me luck and I will do the same for you!!!

I tried on this diet before. I lost 30lbs within 4 months. Along eating with this diet, I swam an hour everyday. The following side effects I experienced: light headed, fainted, felt very weak, could not concentrate. I was so scared and stopped with this diet. I gained every single pound back. It took for a while to adapt to new body system. I looked so pale and was tired all the time. This diet is recommended for a short period of time. It should be taken turn every other week.

I never completely went on this diet, but I loved the soup. I call it "clean out the fridge" soup. For those who don't know how to make it, the basis is cut up cabbage and add any and all veggies (cubed potatoes, carrots, celery, green pepper, zucchini. You can add tomato juice and seasonings, bouillion cube or anything for added flavor. Bits of ham are good in it too. I love to make it in winter.

The first time that I heard about this diet was more than 20 years ago and it was at a hospital. Back then, in PR when a person was going for open heart surgery and was overweight, they use to put the patient on this diet for a week to bring the weight down fast and lower bp, cholesterol etc... on a short period of time. It was years later, that someone started suggesting this cabbage soup a a way to lose weight fast.

    Day One:
Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

    Day Two:
Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed will all fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.

    Day Three:
Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.

    Day Four:
Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.

    Day Five:
Beef And Tomatos: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomtoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef one one of the beef days (but not both).

    Day Six:
Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.

    Day Seven:
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.
