American Heart Association No-Fad Diet
Published 03/2/2006 | Low Fat , Low Calorie , High Fiber | Rating:

The American Heart Association was determined to create a rebuttal to all of those fly-by-night diets floating around, and the No-Fad Diet is it. There's no magic here, they say. To be more accurate, it's a lifestyle change -- not a diet. The goal of the American Heart Association is to provide you with the tools you need to create a personalized weight loss plan that works for you for life.

Using their Circle of Success, you'll rely on three key components for your license to lose: Think Smart, Eat Well and Move More. The circles are intertwined and you'll need all three to achieve your goal. As the leading authority in heart health, the American Heart Association isn't going to turn you on to anything drastic or controversial. It's more a common-sense approach than anything.

Think Smart: Take a close look at the way you think. Instead of devoting so much energy to negative thinking, adopt a positive attitude about healthy living. Planning is a necessity. Examine how your current habits fit with your healthy new lifestyle. If they're in direct conflict, it's time to make some adaptations. Change your way of thinking to make it more cohesive with eating healthy and getting active.

Eat Well: Eat less and make smarter choices. Use the American Heart Association’s calorie calculation and BMI chart to determine how many calories you should be eating on a daily basis. Log what you eat in an eating journal. Get the proper servings of each food group. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein and moderate in healthy fats

Move More: It's that simple. Integrate a walking program into your schedule. Join classes or take up a sport. Find the fitness program that is most suited to what you enjoy doing. If you're having fun while getting fit, you'll be more inclined to stick with it.

I like the fact you stress lifestlye changes rather than a specific "diet".

What my doctor recommends. No buying pills that do not work. Just common sense, control, and exercise.

I have never been on a diet, but I have read and looked over so many diets. I never could commit to any of them, my mother was into natural, organic etc. So I learned alot from her and on my own. What you have said is true, you have to check food contents on a box, package etc. I think alot of people do not know what alot of the processed, sugar you name it all means or just don't bother to read the contents. There are so many food temptations out there, it is not easy for alot of people to eat healthy or what is good for them. I guess I have probably said enough, so thank you.

Terrific article Only changing habits eating less and healthier and positively read food labels, looking closely at sugar and sodium content, as well as calories and fat, eating less processed foods, and getting exercise are definitely the 3 key factors. Also, if necessary getting support to keep up movitivation is very helpful. Thanks

The American Heart Association is a trusted authority. They know losing and maintaining weight is all about lifestyle changes. Most diets do not work because, once you go off them, you gain all the weight back. Having a positive attitude, making healthy food choices, and incorporating some form of exercise in your life are all parts of a desirable lifestyle. Go for it!

If you can't walk, then move your arms and upper body. Anything to get your heart rate up will help burn fat. It may not be targeted to specific areas, but it will certainly help you feel better and healthier. You also have to focus on being healthy, not on being sick. I know that's hard to do when you are sick, but it WILL make a difference. AHA...great job cutting through all the commercialism in food and diet products!

I PUT MORE TRUST IN READING FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION THAN ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION. MAKE BETTER CHOICES ON WHAT YOU EAT AND JUST GET MOVING TO BURN CALORIES. I KEEP IN MIND AT ALL TIMES 3 THINGS: DECIDE, COMMIT AND SUCCEED.
