Great American Detox Diet
Published 03/3/2006 | Other , Low Carb , Low Fat , Low Calorie , High Fiber | Rating:

When Supersize Me transformed fiancé Morgan Spurlock into an overweight and ill fast-food junkie, holistic health counselor and vegan chef Alex Jamieson launched a one-woman mission to nurse him back to wellness. Spurlock packed on 30 pounds and showed liver damage after feasting on McDonald's for 30 days.

Her prescription for recovery was the Great American Detox Diet. The 8-week program brought Spurlock back to fine form and it can do the same for you, even if you haven't spent the last month gorging on fast food. Jamieson definitely considers fast food the enemy.

Among the foods on her hit list: sugar, caffeine, dairy, wheat, corn and an excess of fat, carbs and protein. Her plan requires you to reduce and eliminate all sugars, including refined sugars found in everything from cakes and cookies to pasta sauces and salad dressing. Get rid of all soda - even the diet versions. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Consume at least one green leafy vegetable a day. They're full of vitamins and minerals and they detoxify, cleanse and energize your body. Broccoli, spinach, silverbeet, bok choy and cabbage (fresh of frozen) all fit the bill.

Drawing on her cooking background, Jamieson encourages followers to indulge in walnut burgers, sweetcorn and kidney bean chili, sesame pasta, vegetarian san choy bow, Thai noodle salad and a morning shake made of fruit, soy milk and aloe vera juice.

What a fool to eat only McDonald's for 30 days. The Great American Detox Diet sounds rather difficult to adhere to. Good luck Doug, especially with that vegetarian san choy box.

This review was informative...more detail than is usually given. Enough info to get me interested (at least it sounds like something I might be able to follow) and get more information from the book.

I liked the article about what to eliminate, but it would have been nice to have recipes for the burgers, chili, pasta, etc.

This is a great starter for a person to start to think of detxing. The fast food junkie was taking a health risk and to detox is a good idea. Sometimes we all go overboard and need a detox once in a while. Keep up the good articles. There is something for everyone.

This sounds like a 'real' diet. No loss of tasty foods. Different from one that is usually eaten but tasty no less. Rene

I don't think there are many people out there that eat that way. Spurlock's McDonald's eating binge is a bad one to use. You can still go to a fast food restaurant and order a burger your way. I went to McDonald's and ordered a burger no bread and I got it.

The information was good, suggestions were good, but very abbreviated. Many people have no idea where to get these foods or how to make them themselves so it turns out to be basically useless information if where's and how-to's are not included.

Some intersting ideas, but geting rid of wheat and dairy does not sound very healthy to me in the long run. Complex csrbs & calcium are essential to a healthy diet.
