On the hunt for effective weight loss? Take a cue from the cavemen and their traditional style of eating. The Caveman Diet, also known as the Paleolithic Diet or the Hunter-Gatherer Diet, draws on a way of eating that dates back 40,000 years. There’s no need to break out the club and spear. Instead arm yourself with the knowledge of how prehistoric man got by… and did it so healthily. In other words, the caveman didn’t eat Twinkies and Ho Ho’s and neither should you. Thousands of years ago, foods were eaten “as is.” There was no process by which additives and preservatives were supplemented in foods. The cavemen had to work with what they had, and for that very reason their diet was rich in meat, fish, poultry and the leaves, roots and fruits of many plants. The Caveman Diet draws on the principals to help modern-day man achieve a balance whereby he can eat healthy, lose weight and still feel satisfied. The high-protein, low-carb diet cuts out grains, beans, potatoes, dairy products, sugar and salt and embraces meat, chicken, fish, eggs, vegetables, nuts and berries. There is a strong emphasis on root vegetables (carrots, turnips, parsnips) and organ meats (liver and kidneys). Grains, beans and potatoes are excluded because they cause an imbalance of the blood sugar levels, they are a poor source of vitamins, they can be poisonous if not fully cooked and they’re loaded with enzyme blockers and lectins, which damage the cell lining of the small intestine and strip protective mucus off the walls of the small intestine. Turn the food pyramid upside down and you’ll get a feel for how you should be eating when you go back in time. With the Caveman Diet, 35% of your food should come from plant sources with 65% coming from animal sources. By weeding out heavily processed foods, you are decreasing your risk for heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other ailments.

i think that though this is a good & healthy diet i would find it hard to do because a lot of food i like are based on grains & i love baked potato! Also while i do like meats i dont like eating all meals centered around meat. such as i'd rather have spagetti (grains) & meatballs compared to meat & vegies!!!

This diet was much easier in the days when dinner was a meal I cooked from scratch. Now days breakfast is coffee and a danish at Starbucks, lunch out with the girls and dinner is out with the family or in the car. I wish someone could figure out how to turn this into a grab-n-go deal.

I would have liked a little more information - like a sample day's meals. I did find it interesting enough to want more information.

This was a balanced common sense, accurate representation of the way we should all eat...However, I feel the writer failed to state that in todays' society due to the depleation of our soils some form of multivitamin/supplement is essentially necessary for ALL ages.

The caveman did hunt animals all the time for their source of food, and if you think about their life expectancy was about the age of 45. Yes they ate lots of berries and greens, but they also had to rely on meat as a main food.

If we would all go by this diet we would be much healthier now, even though their are ways of eating using different ideas of meat and root vegetables, use fruits and berries for dessert now lets see if I( can do it for a week.

This is the best article and true cut down on processed foods and move more. Cavemen didn't have tvs and videos either, so they were more active. Keep up the great nutrition information.

I did this diet several years ago. My Dr recommended me eating nothing but meat, veggies and a small amount of fruit. He said to eat a different kind of meat each day - chicken, beef, fish, pork, etc... I did this for one month (and walked 30 min a day) and I lost 40 lbs. It was really very easy. After the 30 days I was told to add back one food per week (i.e potatoes, beans, dairy, etc...).

I heard about this diet somewhere else - they say not to eat your big meal until right before bed, and nothing during the day. If I were a caveman, and I was hungry, I'd eat while I was hunting and gathering, especially if I found a juicy patch of berries that I knew I couldn't carry all of them home, or was really lucky fishing that day - stoke that fire, I'm eating now, or it's sushi time. The basic idea of eating barely processed foods is good, though.

I think the part them kept them slim, was the physical hunting to get the meat and berries rather than the eating of the meat and berries.
