With the decline of the low-carb diet came the birth of the G.I. Diet.
Perhaps the hottest diet to hit the weight loss circuit in 2005, the G.I. Diet measures foods based on their Glycemic Index -- the speed at which foods are broken down to form glucose. Saturated fat and processed foods are replaced by complex carbohydrates. In addition to controlling the appetite, a G.I. diet helps control the appetite and keep hunger at bay. Foods with a low G.I. ranking are responsible for slower digestion and absorption. These traits result in gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels, which has proven health benefits. By balancing unrefined complex carbs with lean protein and healthy fat, it's easier to keep blood sugars stable and boost energy. The diet is a balance of protein, carbs and healthy fats. But be prepared to cut out candy, cookies, cakes and other foods that are high in sugar. Unlike other low-carb diets, the G.I. diet focuses on quality not quantity. Instead of unrefined carbs, it calls for individuals to consume whole oats, brown rice, whole grain breads and snacks. Whole grain foods require more time to digest so the body feels fuller for a longer period of time. Foods are assigned a G.I. value on a scale of 0 to 100. Pure glucose has a G.I. value of 100. Foods with a high Glycemic Index break down fast, causing the body to feel hungry not long after eating. Processed foods made with white flour have high G.I. levels.

I found the information very helpful. I had heard about Glycemic Index diets, but I didn't know how the diet worked. Luckily, I eat all the foods recommended now, and rarely eat anything made with white flour. I eat low amounts of sugar and never processed foods.

This is an excellent food plan. I was diagnosed diabetic last March and started looking for a food plan that I could live with. The G.I. plan has been easy to follow and satisfies me.

When you said GI diet I thought you ment GI as in stomach and the rest. I have a hiatial hernia and have bad acid reflux. My husband has problems with gas and liquid stools. We could use a report on GI help.

It sounds like something I'd like to try-my problem is I have alot of food allergies-wheat, whey, oats, barley,basil, all seafood, all nuts, aspertame,lamb, veal,coconut,peanut butter,egg whites. How can I work around this?

This was a good start but only a start. What is the GI of what foods? I dont just eat white bread, mashed potatoes , and yoguart. I also do not like to go to a referred area (eating)and get a credit card application. Please give real information and help.

Hello....I grew up with someone who is a diabetic. So, I am very skeptical of any diet that doesn't include the 4 food groups. This is the first diet that I have seen that makes sense with a diabetic diet. Even if you don't eat a totally diabetic diet or aren't diabetic yourself, keeping tabs on what you eat is a good practice. Good fats and lots of dairy is a good idea, in my opinion.

I have done this diet. It works amazingly. I have many health problems and all I can say this has helped me out quite a bit. It is almost like eating the mediterrain way.

I did this diet for health reasons.It was amazing.Not only did I drop the weight,my sugars came down,colestoral was in the 600's, it is now in the low 200's. I was never really heavy to begin with,only wanted to lose 10 lbs.When I found out how it helped me, I now eat this way all the time.I'm of middle eastern decent, so it's almost like a mediterrian diet.Which happens to be a very healthy way of eating.
