Curves
Published 03/4/2006 | Other | Rating:

Most women complain that they don't exercise because they don't have the time or know-how to even get started. With this in mind, the founders of Curves created a woman's-only gym that requires just 30 minutes, three times a week. With Curves, you get a workout that incorporates both aerobic and strength-training exercises using hydraulic resistance machines.

With more than 10,000 locations and growing, Curves prides itself in creating an atmosphere that's both chock full of fun and a supportive climate. With more than 4 million members, many of the people who attend Curves have found the workout establishment via word of mouth.

Designed just for women, you don't have to change weights or struggle to work the machines. There is always a trained staff on-hand to ensure that you're using the machines properly and maintaining the right form. Through simple resistance work, you're able to move throughout the circuit with ease. Instead of lifting and lowering weight, you push and pull your way through the course.

The workout includes five steps: warm-up, aerobic exercise, strength training, cool down and stretching. During the 30-minute circuit, you move from machine to machine performing aerobics in between. By using the weight-bearing machines, you'll also lower your risk for osteoporosis and other degenerative diseases.

I have been doing Curves for 5 weeks and absolutely love it. I can tell a difference in my hips, stomach, and arms. The thing about curves is that you lose inches at first. you'll lose a few pounds, but the logic is that your body is going to build muscle first and then will burn the fat. We all know muscle burns fat! you'll love curves if you try it. The environment is great. I can totally see this being a total lifestyle change for me. I look forward to going. Try it, you won't regret it, but be realistic about your expectations of it. You will see the results, but differently than what most people think.

I've been a member at curves since March of 06 and have lost 12 inches and 13 pounds. I always thought that I could do the exercise part on my own. I can't. I love going to curves and even got me sister back to it and my mom goes now too!

I joined curves several years ago and enjoyed it. However, their hours were not compatible with my work schedule. When I was able to go, it was usually full and I had to wait for someone to finish using the equipment before I could join in. They do not open early enough for me or stay open late enough. I quit going because I got tired of having to wait to use the machinery.

I did go to curves, and I did like it, however, being a working person, their hours seem to be geared more towards the stay at home Moms. They don't open early and they don't stay open very late. I work from 8:30 - 5:00 p.m. and my commute is an hour to and from work, so by the time I get home, make sure my child is all set, the place is about ready to close. So it doesn't work out for everyone....

i am a member of my local curves and love going and seeing what it does for me...it actually changes my whole outlook for the day with giving me more energy to be able to motivate and keep going during the day without getting tired. i go three times a week as i can manage with my schedule. i did not go all summer long and when i did return, i felt like i was starting all over again so it pays to keep going when the changes start in your healthier lifestyle than to stop and try to restart. i would recommend curves to anyone age, size, or handicap makes no difference because there is a desired setup for everyone. keep up the good work curves all over the world your staff is outstanding.

I have completed over 400 rounds at my local Curves of Odenton, MD and this program works if you faithfully attend. Even when I could not go for medical reasons, I didn't feel like I was starting from scratch again and could get back into the routine and still enjoy it.

I belong to curves and in the first month of working out there and watching my calories, I lost a total of 11.75 inches all over my body. I really enjoy going. The staff is very friendly and a bunch of my co-workers workout there as well. They also enjoy going.

I joined Curves June of this year and I just love it. I faithfully go three times a week and feel guilty if I can't make it. In the first month I lost 4 lbs and 23 inches. I was so excited it gave me the incentive to keep going. The one I go to is right by my house so I stop on the way home which makes it easy. Sometimes it is busy and you have to take turns on the machines but it is worth the wait. I have a little medical set back right now and I can't go for a few weeks but I am looking forward to starting up again. It now has become a part of my lifestyle. It is like going to work, I know it is something I have to do. The only way you won't be successful is if you give up and quit. The more you go the more you will lose. I have tried every diet out there too and exercising was something I could never force myself to do. Curves makes it so easy. Once you get used to the routine, the 30 minutes goes so fast you don't even realize that you have done anything. Everyday I see a difference in myself and my family and friends are starting to see the difference too. That is what makes you keep going. The staff at the Curves that I go to in Redlands, CA are just wonderful. There is nothing that they won't do to help you reach their goal. I trully recommend this weight loss program to everyone. If I can lose the weight anyone can.

    Sincerely,

    Fay Heard

I have been attending Curves for almost 3 yrs and I really love it! I have had a few inactive times due to health and injuries, and my body really starts missing the exercising. I would reccomend it to everyone. It makes exercising fun and easy!
All the employees are so nice and helpful. It is a very fun environment.

Hi..I have been a Curves member for four years and can say that is has positvely changed my life. I love the interaction with other members, the machines and how easy they are to use, the diet itself, and what a good work out does to boost my metabolism. I am sixty-one, and feel half my age. I highly recommend Curves to all age groups. Our Curves is a "Shining Star" and has all fourteen machines plus the new stretch machine on the way. I plan on staying with Curves until I am too old to work the machines, and then, I will go, just to encoruage others !!!

I have been going to curves since last October and I love it! I have lost about 20 total lbs (18 lbs of body fat) 20 inches off my body. I have went from a size 16 to a size 8 since November. In order to do this you must cut down on your portion sizes when eating. I started eating lean cuisine and healthy choice dinners. They are portion controlled and they taste great. Eat a sensible breakfast and eat one of those dinners for lunch and supper. Eat fruits and veggies for snacks. Don't drink any sodas or diet drinks (diet drinks contain artificial sweetners and I read somewhere that artificial sweetners can inhibit fat loss). Drink only water and skim milk if you like. If you want to see weight loss, you need to diet along with the exercise. I am really happy with the results. The curves program is a program you have to stick with. It is not hard though. I go at least 3 times a week. I would recommend it to everyone. Even if you don't want to lose weight, it is very healthy to exercise. This is a great program! The proof is when you get weighed and measured! From a very satisfied curves customer.

I joined Curves two months ago and I really love going. The best thing about it is that if I have to run errands in another part of town I can stop in and do my workout at another location. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I do wish they stayed open longer but just getting the discipline back in my life to work out on a regular basis is the best. I have used other gyms but Curves is the best, plus you get to meet all types and age groups of people. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

I've been going to Curves for the past 3 years and I absolutely love it.At 69 years of age, I'm not looking to get skinny, just to be in better shape. I have arthritis and the 30 minute workouts have really increased my range of motion, plus I've lost almost 30 lbs.The one that I go to in NJ is open from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm weekdays and 7:30 to 12:30 on the weekend so it's very convenient for me. I can go before or after work. I highly recommend it!

I joined Curves in February, 06. I have lost 16 inches so far. I work out 5 days a week and walk to and from the work outs. Our Curves has nice hours we have early and late hours to help even the working Moms. And we have several people with disabilities that work out to help gain the strength to continue with every day tasks. Curves is much more than just a gym. Curves has become a second family to me. You get to know everyone and miss them when they are gone and want to find out about their travels when they get back. Thank you

I was a member of Curves and it exercise and layout are wonderful but the draw backs are they have limited times in the evening and usually only until noon on Saturday. The cost is the same that you pay for in most large gym's and you have no shower facilities, or anything else except the Curves circle of aerobics and strength training. An expensive restrictive set up!

I just joined Curves. After being a member of countless gyms, Jazzercise, etc, Curves is the best thing I have found for me. I can go anytime (right after work is usually best), and it doesn't matter. There is structure (a problem when classes at most gyms don't start until after 5)and there is usually at least one other client there. Everybody is friendly and helpful. The thirty minutes goes by quickly, and you've really worked out your entire body. My mood has improved after just a few workouts. I see this as a lifestyle changing choice!

I have heard good things about CURVES. Although I have not tried it I believe it is a very good exercise regimen. I have not inquired but I am 80 years old and this seems to be applied to much younger women. At my age I probably could not do much exercising with them anyway. (smile) Irene

I had gone to check out a Curve location near my house and found it very small with only a few people to exercise at a time. I had to wait for my turn and then I also realized their times do not meet my schedule. I agree that it is more focused to stay at home moms. Also, I noticed that there were more older age women than in 30s. I wasnt sure why that is.

I iniatially loved working out at Curves, I lost 12 inches the first three months. But as I developed health problems - arthritis and back pain, I had to quit going. Several of the machines are just too hard on my joints. I have been told many drs. are receiving patients from Curves. So just remember to listen to your body and if you start having pain -Stop. Walking and water aerobics are great for those of us with chronic pain.

As a member for 5 years in May I've lost over 100 pounds and found the review of the workout & weight management program to be fairly true. The hardest part of the whole thing is developing the exercise/eat right habit.

My Curves opens at 6am and closes at 7pm so I found that I had no reason not to workout, the cost is about 20 a month less than any of the other gyms around here PLUS there are no men or gym bunnies (young hotties) running around. Our Curves is also very community minded in that they do things year round to support the food bank, Salvation Army, and the American Cancer Socity. Every March and October they also run membership specials to collect food for the food bank (March), and money for Breast Cancer awarness (October). Right now our club is trying to collect 2008 pounds of food in 31 days. The sooner we collect it the sooner our club managers hair will be dyed blue! That is dedication to our community and the women in it.

I am member of Curves, and so thankful for the day I found one. I love the strength-training workout to music. As someone who exercised most of my life, I found that as I moved into my late 40's, work became more demanding and the outside exercise programs became too difficult to fit into my schedule. I didn't realize how my weight just crept up on me. I am someone who has successfully used the concepts learned in the Curves 6-week Solution program to take off 35 pounds and reduce my body fat percentage from the morbidly obese category to the recommended range.

I believe that your statement about no restriction of calories is misleading; since you must limit your caloric intake to 1600 calories until you reach your goal weight...which I am still doing. I love to cook, and have cleared my kitchen of the "unhealthy" foods, so just about anything I prepare is acceptable. Portion control is the key. It is only AFTER you have reached your goal that you can move up to 2000-2500 calories.
