What could a famous German fashion designer know about diet and fitness? Apparently enough to write his own manual to weight loss. After years of struggling with obesity, Karl Lagerfeld turned to physician Dr. Jean-Claude Houdret, and the two men devised the "Spoonlight Program" that help the Chanel designer drop 80 pounds in one year. The plan utilizes three strategies – cut back calories, eliminate refined, fatty and fried foods and increase lean proteins and fresh vegetables. Low in carbs, low in fat and low in calories, the "Spoonlight Program" might sound like a drag until you get the fabulous French recipes such as fish soufflé, tuna and blackberry mousse, veal with plums and stuffed endives. There's also the daily "protein sachets," the creators' version of a Slim-Fast shake which should be consumed along with eight ounces of vegetables. The first phase of the diet is super-restrictive, calling for just 800 calories a day while under the guidance of a physician. If you haven't starved to death after the initial two weeks, you’ll move on to phase two. With a daily intake of 1,000 to 1,200 calories, it’s only natural to feel a tad deprived, not to mention hungry. By phase three, you’ll graduate to a measly 1,200 to 1,600 calories, which might make you feel semi-human again if you're lucky. However, it’s a necessary evil according to this "diet" guru. Dieting has to be sort of punishment, Lagerfeld says. So if you're in the mood to make the transformation from food glutton to glutton for punishment, the Karl Lagerfeld Diet might be right up your alley. Keep in mind Lagerfeld also debunks the importance of exercise and promotes cosmetic surgery as a tool for achieving a better body.

This was a great review. It has let me know NEVER to try this diet. The only way to lose weight and KEEP IT OFF (which is our really goal isnt it?) is to change our lifestyle and eating habits. This might be a temporary fix if you have someplace to go, but not for long term success!

If you are going to just eat 800 calories a day, you might as well eat them however you want, I'll be darn if I would eat tuna and plums. This diet is for the eating disorder prone.

The review of this diet was entertaining to read, but it did not explain how one gets the Spoonlight Program recipes. These recipes are key to make this program work. How should the daily "protein sachets" be included? As one full meal? Is the recipe for the powder-portion mentioned somewhere?
From my own experience, I was not losing any weight, although I was eating only 800 calories a day, or even less. I looked like a mini-blimp, because I had not exercised in any way for too long. As soon as I began an exercise program and jump-started weight loss with a cleansing diet of eating only fruit in the morning and vegetables only for lunch and dinner for a few days (I can't remember how long it lasted, as it was nearly 30 years ago), my metabolism rate began to function properly and has continued to do so ever since. I am allergic to all soy products, and most "Slim-Fast shakes" contain soy products. The review didn't mention whether the "protein sachets" with the eight ounces of vegetables should constitute one meal. Is the recipe for the daily "protein sachets" included somewhere?
I have always been more of a glutton for punishment rather than a glutton for food, and I most heartily promote the importance of exercise and debunk any form of cosmetic surgery.

This sound rediculas. And it still took a whole year to lose the 80 pounds. Weightwatchers is a great tool. I'm a beleiver. But like everything else with out exercise you won't lose much.

Eating about 800 calories a day can easily be done with the South Beach Diet dinners sold in Wegmans for 3.00 or Dollar Foods for 1.00 each. I don't think I could eat the foods the way they are described here, but I can and do do it with the South Beach Diet dinners. They have about 220-360 calories per meal and you choose which ones you want to eat. They come with jello for dessert, which I normally save for a couple of hours later. I never was a cookie person but I loved potato chips, pizza, and pasta. I'm learning it's all about the desire to lose the weight, and learning to reduce the portion sizes. I am new at it, it's only been 5 days, but I have lost 4 pounds and feel fine. I don't go hungary. If I get hungary, I have a diet snapple freeze pop or atomic bomb pop (red, white and blue). It satisfies the "crunch desire" and isn't too fattening or calorie packed. You can survive on 800 calories or less and be happy. I'm a water drinker and a person who agrees with very low calorie intake-but I cannot stand fish in any way shape or form, except in a tank!!!!

Are you kidding me? He "debunks the importance of exercise and promotes cosmetic surgery as a tool for achieving a better body"??? This is an absurd diet. The best diet is one that takes off weight at a consistent and steady pace through a moderate caloric deficit and a combination of light weight training and aerobic exercise. A diet that strips weight off (much of it being water and also your precious muscle) at such a fast rate is not only uncomfortable and unhealthy, but does not promote a healthy long-term strategy. With the addition of exercise, you will promote maintaining your muscle mass as well increase your metabolism and putting on a bit of extra muscle will help to burn calories in itself. That sounds much healthier their extreme caloric deprivation and cosmetic surgery.

This review is completely garbage. I've read the book, and in NO WAY does it advocate plastic surgery. As a matter of fact Karl expressly says that it's not the way to lose weight, but he has no problem with people who want to have it. Whomever wrote this should be fired. It's CLEAR that they didn't read the book.

dieting is not fun. you must deprive yourself if you want to lose weight. common sense tells you that if you eat the donut, you'll see it on your hips later. So if you don't to work hard to lose the weight, don't diet. There's no easy fix except plastic surgery.

When are people going to learn that NO ONE SHOULD DIET! EVER! It's not about cutting back on calories or fat or sugar or what ever for a few months while you "diet" It's a lifestyle change you need if you are over weight! It means you are taking in more than you are burning off, it's that simple. You basically have two options if you want to lose weight, you either eat less or move more, ok 3 things you can do, you might try both eating less and moving more. Learn about your food and what is good and what is not. My GOD the information is everywhere! Eat 6 times a day, move for 30 minutes or better increasing that as you get stronger, lift weights, muscle burns calories! Diets don't work. Eat what you want just don't eat a ton of it lol. Get moving! I swear it works and I'm not gonna charge you a bit for the info!
