Scarsdale Diet
Published 03/4/2006 | Low Calorie | Rating:

Created in the 1970s, the Scarsdale Medical Diet is a stringent two-week, low-calorie diet that leaves no room for interpretation. It is an all-or-nothing program that must be followed exactly as written, down to the last bite. Extremely restrictive in calories, the plan is based on a ratio of 43 percent protein, 22.5 percent fat and 34.5 percent carbs.  Followers have dropped up to 20 pounds in two weeks under the guidelines of the Scarsdale Diet, although the average person loses between 7 to 15 pounds consuming between 800 to 1,000 calories a day.

There is a set of rules that must be abided by. Consume only what is on the meal plan. Cut out all alcohol beverages. Snacking is prohibited unless it’s carrots, celery and low-sodium vegetable broth. Permitted beverages include plain coffee, tea, club soda, diet soda and sugar-free drinks and water. Salads should only be consumed with lemon and vinegar or the Scarsdale-approved dressings. Vegetables are to be eaten without butter, margarine or other fats. Consume only lean meats. Do not make any additions or substitutions. Only stay on the diet for two weeks at a time, alternating between the main plan and the Keep-Trim eating program, a maintenance period to reset the body’s metabolism.

Breakfast is ½ grapefruit, one slice of protein bread and plain coffee or tea – every day. Lunch varies from cold cuts, tomatoes and coffee to tuna fish salad with lemon and vinegar dressing, grapefruit and coffee. Choices for dinner include sliced roast lamb, a salad of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and celery and coffee or fish, a combination salad, one slice of protein bread and coffee.

There are plenty of red flags with the Scarsdale Diet. For starters, it’s low in calories and high in protein. The program also encourages the use of artificial sweeteners and herbal appetite suppressants. Critics also point out that if you don’t get enough water when following the diet, there is a risk of kidney damage.

The artificial sweeteners are enough to stop me with out the danger of kidney failure. The diet is to restricted for me, but there are some good foods on it also. The vegetables are good, but the lemon and vinegar dressing I couldn't take everyday.

This diet does work. I am glad that the bit about drinking enough water was said. In all actuality, u should drink plenty of water on any diet because it helps flush the fat out of ur system and the scarsdale diet burns fat so fast at a level that ur kidneys is not use to, so it is very important to get enough water with this particular diet because kidney damage is very hard to recover from.

How does this diet affect diabetics? And on the commetn above on the roast lamg; what if one doesnt like lamg - I dang sure dont. Hows about a fish sub for the lamb? A little leeway should always be available in any diet.

And oh yes, I cannot eat grapefruit because of a cholesterold medication I take - what now?

This diet works. Plain and simple. I've lost and kept off 40 pounds. It's incredibly hard to go through for the novices.

After the 2 weeks are up (assuming you make it through), you're supposed to go on a easier "keep trim" diet, but I find it nearly impossible not to revert to most of my old eating habits during this 'time off'.

The good part about this diet, if you ever gain a few unexpected pounds that you want to lose quickly, hop on the medical diet for a week or two and the pounds will disappear.

Would like to know more restrictions on this diet. I know that if you are taking Xanex you cannot eat grapefruit, is their a substitute for this. I beleive and I am in no means slightly close to any medical profession, that grapefruit and Xanex can cause some serious damage. Does this diet go over more restrictions in a more detail of the program?

This diet really really really does work. I could swear by it. I dont know what I would do if it didnt exsist. The diet is restrictive, but its a very low sacrifice for how fast you lose the weight. For some strange reason after the first couple of days on the diet you dont feel hungry anymore. I guess that means your stomach is shrinking or something. I suggest that people do it 6 days a week and choose 1 day out of the week to eat whatever they want then go back on the very next day. This way it'll be easier to stick to the diet longer. You WILL lose a pound a day. Its unbelievable.

I've done this diet a of couple times over the last 20 years. First time lost 22 pounds in 4 weeks. Am on the diet right now and have lost 11 pounds in 1 week. I make substitutions. If I feel the need to have something different, I think its my body telling me that, So I make those changes once in a while. Drinkign ay fluid counts as water intake. So it doesn't always have to be all water.

This diet works! I cannot say how good it is. I lost 20kg (44lbs) a few years ago and it has stayed off. I do substitute a bit - half and orange instead of the grapefruit, and beef instead of lamb (can't stand lamb). It still works as long as you are sensible.

I've been considering this diet but the amount of protein concerns me because I would be going on the vegetarian diet. Has anyone who has used that version found any problems?
