An eating plan high in fiber can go a long way in preventing disease, promoting weight loss and improving health. Many people assume fiber is nothing more than a fix for relieving constipation. However, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, lowers the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer and other conditions. There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. When soluble fiber dissolves into water, it forms a gel-like substance that lowers cholesterol and glucose levels. Soluble fiber is also responsible for lowering the absorption of sugar, which benefits diabetics by keeping blood sugars level. Soluble fiber is found in apples, oats, oatmeal, peas, beans, citrus fruits and other foods. Insoluble fiber promotes better digestion, helps alleviate constipation and assists in regulating bowl movements. Whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts and other vegetables are rich in insoluble fiber. High-fiber diets assist in weight loss because the foods take longer to chew, which gives the body more time to realize that it’s full. This prevents overeating. High-fiber foods also encourage satiety and reduced hunger. The recommended daily allotment of fiber is 20 to 35 grams. High-fiber foods include: beans, bran cereals, peas, oat bran, peanuts, raspberries, wheat bran, whole grain bread and whole-wheat pasta. By following the nutrition labels on foods or consulting charts that disclose fiber counts, it is easy to stick to a high-fiber diet. For example, ¾ cup Fiber One has 12 grams of fiber, while 1/3 cup of cooked garbanzo beans has 10 grams of fiber. In addition to filling up on high-fiber foods, eliminate processed foods such as pasta, bread and rice. Experts also recommend drinking 64 fluid ounces of liquid a day, preferably water.

My problem also is that I have MS. I am presently on 1000mg of intervenious steriod monthly. I do eat a lot of fruits & veg., chicken, turkey, red meat once a week. I do drink 62oz of fluids a day, not only water on some days, but more than not. I walk 1 mile a day with my do, 1/2 mile if its real warm. He is a boxer and doesn't react well to the heat either.

The info that I read in high fiber is good But I would have to find out more about this diet to be able to start on it. There isn't enough info on the amount cosumed from each group to make this a good diet to begin. What about health wise, and foods from other groups?

Mechanically speaking, this review was poorly edited. Paragraph three has a misspelled word: bowl should be bowel. This paragraph also has three sentences that describe the same thing: satiety. Are there no other benefits?
This review provided useful information, particularly the discussion about soluble and insoluble fiber.
A tool that dieters would find most useful is the book Nutrition Almanac, by Lavon J. Dunne, which is currently in the 5th edition. Section V of this book contains 93 pages of food analysis, including fiber, which is extremely useful in estimating amounts of fiber found in vegetables and fruit, if you prepare these yourself. All the dieter needs to do is monitor the intake of fiber each day mathematically, which will ensure that the recommended daily allotment of fiber is reached, 20 to 35 grams.
Sometimes visualizing exactly how much fluid 64 fluid ounces is can be a problem. I like to fill two quart jars with water to ensure that I drink the full amount. After this has been accomplished, then a person can safely add other liquids to the diet plan for the day.
This diet is an excellent plan to encourage people to read labels on prepared food products carefully. The daily exercise in computing mathematically exactly how much fiber is consumed is excellent training in promoting healthier food choices. There are no grams of fiber in meat and dairy products. You can eat these foods, but you must also include the necessary grams of fiber in other foods to reach the goal of 20-35 grams of fiber each day.

I dislike the word "diet." How about using the phrase "ChooseYourLifestyle" instead? The problem with using the word "diet" is that it is usually viewed as a temporary solution to a lifestyle of poor eating habits, which is what creates the whole need to go on a "diet." The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to PERMANENTLY alter your lifestyle and eating habits!!!

The Nutri-System Plan work s very well..their meals are very satisfying, they are loaded with protein and fiber !! They really do fill you up the healthy way....they have desserts, snacks and you can have a little of everything you love to eat every day, you can eat all the salad veggies that you want, it's really great !!..Cleansing the colon happens naturally when you eat alot of fiber, Elvis Presly had 60 pounds of waste in his intestines when he died, it was packed inside of him and never came out because he didn't eat fiber and he ate alot of fat...

Like many other "diet plans" I have looked at, this one, too, does not address food allergies and intolerances except for dairy. High fiber is very difficult for me, since I am allergic/intolerant to all grains except oats and rice, many fruits and vegetables, including apples, lettuce and tomatoes, some nuts, and other foods as well. This makes following any kind of "prescribed diet" very difficult, especially a high fiber diet. Drinking the water isn't a problem, though.

I already eat a high-fiber diet. Some days, there is fiber in every piece of food I ingest. Start the day with peanut butter on whole wheat for breakfast or a high-fiber cereal with soy milk. For lunch, I often eat a sardine sandwich on whole wheat again, or I take bwhole-wheat pasta (it's all I have in my apt.) or I take a brown rice dish with peas and other tasty add-ins. For dinner, if I haven't had pasta for lunch I east whole-wheat pasta for dinner. Alternately, my vegetable intake is so much better in the evening. Sometimes I make 12 cups of air-popped popcorn, then eat the entire batch and wash that down with 32 oz. room-temperature water.

I had wonderful success w/Curves but can't wkout anymore. Last yr I suffered a lg DVT in my lower r calf and pulmonary embolism. I had developed an idiopathic clotting disorder and will b on coumadin the rest of my life. I also have narcolepsy w/cataplexy, severe fibromyalgia, the beginning of an energy metabolism disorder, irregular blood pressure fluctuations, possible seizures (not epilepsy), mercury toxicity, osteopenia, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, asthma, allergies. I do drink 64 oz. H2O/day. I eat a high fiber diet w/plenty of greens--no fried foods, very sparse use of alcohol. I have nerve damage in my L leg from a fresh muscle biopsy so I can't walk very far--that is the only ordered exercise--I love swimming/pool walking but can't take the chlorine. I am very frustrated--I do at times follow Wt. Watchers pt system--I attended meetings about 5.5 yrs ago--it does work, but my chronic fatigue really limits me. I am on 12 meds/supplements a day--they all are taken around my eating.

This sounds good but I am currently taking 4 tri-fiber pills a day and achieve that which I take them for...good bms. However, it would be good if some weight loss was realized but I'm afraid that hasn't happened. Is there any charge for this. We are too strapped for money at the time as my Husband had a stroke 6 weeks ago and expenses are sky high at this time. No extra money for me and very little time.

This is basic information, but doesn't help me. I have IBS, divertulois, & GERD. Thus no seeds or nuts, minimum citrus, no apples (hard to digest), minimum wheat & beans. I can not eat eggs, onions, bell peppers, any cabbage family plus other gas producing products. I don't drink carbonated beverages or coffee, thus I drink a lot of water with occasional weak iced tea.

It is rare to see this level of interest concerning fiber. To protect your health, it is important to intake proper amounts of fiber. We have seen examples where it comes from.
However, over 20 years ago, I was told that I had hemmoroids (spelling), I was told to take Metamucil (spelling). I did for many years and my hemmoriods went away. But I got tired paying the high price for the brand name product. I tried the cheaper versions without the same success.
So I went to Vitamin Cottage store and bought psyllium.
I buy psyllium husks, I buy psyllium husk powder, I buy psyllium seed powder that I mix for my wife. We try and take it twice minimally. But for myself, I throw in a teaspoon of psyllium seed as well.
So I mix the husk (I buy one bag), I mix it with the husk powder and the psyllium seed powder. That is my fiber. My wife uses a 12 glass and 1 tablespoon of the mixture. I use the same 12 ounce glass but I throw in the teaspoon of pure psyllium seed.
My wife is prediabetic. If she takes the drink and we go walk for a mile of so and she comes back and test her blood, it is ususally around 75.
Talk to your doctor about your own psyllium mix, but it is reasonable to get it all for under 10 and it will last close to 10 to 12 days.
To protect you blood sugar levels, do not take a chance.
Glad to see the interest. Stay healthy.

THIS WAS A VERY GOOD AND EXCELLENT REVIEW BECAUSE IT TELLS US ABOUT THE RIGHT KIND OF FOODS AND WHAT IS GOING TO OR WHATEVER WE COULD USE FOR OUR DIET PLAN. I THINK THAT IS ALRIGHT WITH ME BECAUSE IT'S COMING FROM US ALONE AND YOU ARE THERE JUST TO HELP US ALONG OF WHAT WE ARE DOING. I DO THINK THAT THINGS WOULD COME OUT OKAY WITH THIS. THIS SOUNDS VERY GOOD AND IMPORTANT IN OUR LIVES AND LOVE ONE'S AND THE ONE WHO IS GOING TO BE LOOKING AT US AND SEE IF WE DO KEEP TO OUR SCHEDULE
WITH THE DIET PLAN AND HOW WE ARE DOING WITH THIS. ONE OF MY QUESTION IS THAT CAN A PERSON DRINK ANY KIND OF OR IF THERE IS ANY KIND OF DRINKS TO DRINK WITH THIS. I'M JUST ASKING BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT DRINKING ANY THING. I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THIS. JUST LET ME WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT THIS. IF SO JUST LET ME KNOW WHAT COULD A PERSON SHOULD DRINK WITH THIS DIET PLAN. JUST GIVE ME A LIST OF COULD A PERSON DRINK OR NOT.

I think fiber with exercise could be the answer for me. I have reflux, high triglicerides, & I can't exercise by walking. I had polio at age 2 and am braced on my left leg & walk with crutches. My excercise program will have to be done sitting in a chair, etc. I've already seen slight results by changing to whole grains, nuts & cutting down on carbs. I'm like Michelle, I love pasta too! Can't eat fish or seafood because of horrible allergic reactions.

An easey "gluten free and sugar free" way to add fiber is Benefiber. You can add it to anything and it does not change the flavor or texture in foods or drinks. I assure you that you can not even tell its in there. You can buy it at any supermarket or drugstore.
