Raw Diet
Published 03/30/2006 | Other | Rating:

Food choices are limited to fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, grains, legumes, seaweeds, unprocessed organic and natural foods, freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice, purified water and coconut milk. Followers have the option to prepare foods in a dehydrator, in a blender or in a juicer. Even a little bit of cooked food causes the stomach to produce acid, which leads to indigestion.

Raw food followers also believe that uncooked foods have a bacteria that stimulates the immune system and enhances digestion by populating the digestive tract with beneficial flora. Supposedly, wild foods, wild plants and edible weeds specifically, are among the best raw foods.

Benefits of a raw diet include more energy, healthier skin, better digestion, weight loss, stable body mass index and lowered risk of heart disease. Some medical experts express concerns that people following a raw food diet may not be getting enough nutrients. Also, raw foods are often high in pesticides.  It is not recommended for children.

I thought it was a very good article until the last two sentences. If one is serious about this kind of diet they buy organic which SHOULD be pesticide free.

The review focuses on the strict philosophy of raw foods. But clearly there are benefits for increasing "unprocessed, organic whole plant-based foods" in everyone's diet. The last paragraph of the review could frighten anyone off! Of course increasing raw, organic whole plant based foods in the diet IS good for children. In reality, these foods should be the majority of our diets, if not the exclusive elements. To say that raw foods are "often high in pesticides" is plain foolish, since the description of the diet in the paragraphs above emphasizes "ORGANIC" ingredients. Pesticides are not removed by "cooking". Bacteria may be another matter, but thorough washing will help. Despite the spinach scares of this year, Americans are not going to start cooking their salads any time soon. We eat raw vegetables all the time in raw salad.

Let's be open minded about adopting the best aspects of a philosophy --- it doesn't have to be all or nothing.
