Hoodia
Published 03/30/2006 | Other | Rating:

With so many “weight loss miracles” on the market, it’s only natural to want to file them all under “s” for scams.

Quick weight loss… Never feel hungry again… Lose extra pounds in your sleep… The list of empty promises goes on and on. So why would the hype surrounding Hoodia gordonii be any different? Well, according to some experts, this exotic plant actually performs and does so effectively.

A natural appetite suppressant that resembles a cactus, Hoodia gordonii has been used by African tribesmen to stave off hunger on long trips for centuries. It's also been touted by the Bushmen as a treatment for abdominal cramping, hemorrhoids, tuberculosis, indigestion and diabetes. The authentic Hoodia is culled from the Kalahari Desert region in South Africa.

What most people don't realize is that there are actually 20 different varieties of hoodia, but they're not all created equal. It's the hoodia gordonii that has earned a reputation for its appetite-supressing properties.

Hoodia contains a molecule called P57 which actually prevents hunger pangs by making the brain think you’ve already eaten. Individuals who consume the Hoodia don’t think about hunger, feel fuller longer and maintain an overall feeling of wellness.

Good information, but I'm confused. On one hand they say we should eat three meals a day. So, if our appetite is suppressed, we will not eat. What's the difference?

It was fine that this article said that there are many company/brands of hoodia that are hype but this article dropped the ball by not "suggesting" some brand that are good/safe. I feeling like I was left just hanging there.

What I understand for what I have read is that the Hoodia variety to give credit to as a hunger supressant is the Hoodia Gordinii from South Africa. I have seen products at the drugstores, some with a a seal certifying the Hoodia Gordinii from South Africa. There are other products with just Hoodia name, not Gordinii variety, and not even mentioning its origin from South Africa.

I believe that this is useful for people who are always hungry. My problem is the reverse; I seldom feel hungry, I eat because I know I have to. It is always a struggle to ingest the appropriate number of calories, even though I know if I ate a little more I would be more likely to lose weight. We each have our own problems! Certainly Hoodia is nothing that I need.

i am a sugar addict to the extreme. but i've recently gone on a diet to control it because my weight has always yo-yoed back and forth 30-50 pounds at a time most of my life. i started taking hoodia in the morning, and it works really well throughout most of the day. i usually take one or two at night, too, because i often wake up and feel like i should eat something in order to fall back asleep. in my case, listening to my body's sugar cravings is stupid, but i have to really drill that into my mind, and most times the mind-over-matter approach doesn't work. but the hoodia seems to (i take 2-3 times the recommended dose on the bottle). definitely worth the money for me. i don't think hoodia by itself will make you lose weight, but it will help you eat a bit less and not think about sugar all day long.

I did extensive research on the internet to find out which Hoodia Gordonii brands are authentic. DEX-L10 was the least expensive among those reputed to work, and I can get it at my local Walgreens. I find it too expensive to take every day and wouldn't want to build up a resistance to it anyway (if that's possible), but when I do take it, it works like a charm. I like that it's a natural substance used for centuries by people who apparently suffered no adverse effects, and I hope the Bushmen (there's another name for them, but I can't recall it) are profiting from their tribal wisdom.
