Hoodia
Published 03/30/2006 | Other | Rating:

In one study, Hoodia was injected right into the brains of rats. Researchers discovered that the Hoodia was broken down by the liver. This called into question the amount necessary to ensure that Hoodia would have an effect. The author of the study debated whether there is enough Hoodia in supplements to actually achieve any type of reaction.

According to the proponents of Hoodia, a chemical similar to glucose is released in the body. This chemical, said to be 100,000 times more powerful than glucose, signals the hypothalamus, tricking the body into believing that it has eaten enough food, thereby stopping any feelings of hunger.

Because you don’t get famished as often, the amount of calories you consume decreases, contributing to weight loss.

So far there are no known side effects from ingesting Hoodia. The actual Hoodia plant isn’t found in the U.S.  Experts warn consumers to watch out for nutritional supplements that falsely claim to contain Hoodia. These days, Hoodia is available in capsules, patches, sprays, teas and liquid extracts.

In 2007, at least 300 products are being sold throughout the world that claim to contain “authentic Hoodia gordonii.” The street value of Hoodia is $250 per kilogram.

One major pharmaceutical company is currently working on a formula that should hit the shelves by 2008. In the meantime, you’re left to take your chances with the brands currently on the market.

Good information, but I'm confused. On one hand they say we should eat three meals a day. So, if our appetite is suppressed, we will not eat. What's the difference?

It was fine that this article said that there are many company/brands of hoodia that are hype but this article dropped the ball by not "suggesting" some brand that are good/safe. I feeling like I was left just hanging there.

What I understand for what I have read is that the Hoodia variety to give credit to as a hunger supressant is the Hoodia Gordinii from South Africa. I have seen products at the drugstores, some with a a seal certifying the Hoodia Gordinii from South Africa. There are other products with just Hoodia name, not Gordinii variety, and not even mentioning its origin from South Africa.

I believe that this is useful for people who are always hungry. My problem is the reverse; I seldom feel hungry, I eat because I know I have to. It is always a struggle to ingest the appropriate number of calories, even though I know if I ate a little more I would be more likely to lose weight. We each have our own problems! Certainly Hoodia is nothing that I need.

i am a sugar addict to the extreme. but i've recently gone on a diet to control it because my weight has always yo-yoed back and forth 30-50 pounds at a time most of my life. i started taking hoodia in the morning, and it works really well throughout most of the day. i usually take one or two at night, too, because i often wake up and feel like i should eat something in order to fall back asleep. in my case, listening to my body's sugar cravings is stupid, but i have to really drill that into my mind, and most times the mind-over-matter approach doesn't work. but the hoodia seems to (i take 2-3 times the recommended dose on the bottle). definitely worth the money for me. i don't think hoodia by itself will make you lose weight, but it will help you eat a bit less and not think about sugar all day long.

I did extensive research on the internet to find out which Hoodia Gordonii brands are authentic. DEX-L10 was the least expensive among those reputed to work, and I can get it at my local Walgreens. I find it too expensive to take every day and wouldn't want to build up a resistance to it anyway (if that's possible), but when I do take it, it works like a charm. I like that it's a natural substance used for centuries by people who apparently suffered no adverse effects, and I hope the Bushmen (there's another name for them, but I can't recall it) are profiting from their tribal wisdom.
